Naomi Osaka Opens Up About Struggles Following Maternity Break

Former world number one Naomi Osaka has revealed her challenges in readjusting to tennis following a significant break for maternity. The Japanese star, who welcomed her first child, daughter Shai, in July 2023, made her return to the WTA Tour in January 2024. However, she has yet to find her top form, failing to progress past the quarter-finals in any of her tournaments since her comeback.

In a candid Instagram post on Tuesday, Osaka shared her current struggles, saying, "My biggest issue currently isn't losses though, my biggest issue is that I don't feel like I'm in my body." The 26-year-old, who has won four Grand Slam titles, described a disorienting sensation of being disconnected from her physical game. "It's a strange feeling, missing balls I shouldn't miss, hitting balls softer than I remember I used to," she continued. "Mentally it's really draining through."

Osaka's return has been marked by difficulties, including a recent defeat to American Ashlyn Kreuger in the second round of qualifying for the Cincinnati Open on Monday. Despite these setbacks, Osaka remains determined, encouraging herself with positive affirmations and a resolve to keep pushing forward.

The adjustment period following maternity can be challenging for athletes, as they navigate both physical and mental changes. Osaka's openness about her struggles highlights the often-overlooked aspects of returning to professional sports after significant life events. Fans and fellow players alike will be watching closely to see how she continues to adapt and reclaim her place at the top of the sport.
