Laura Wolvaardt Leads Manchester Originals to Victory Over Southern Brave in The Hundred Women's Competition
At the Utilita Bowl in Southampton, Laura Wolvaardt’s stellar unbeaten 78 guided Manchester Originals to a six-wicket victory over Southern Brave, marking the Brave’s continued search for a win in The Hundred women's competition.
Southern Brave, opting to bat first, posted a competitive 136-5. The innings was anchored by Danni Wyatt, who scored a brisk 61 off 46 balls. Charli Knott (27) and Maia Bouchier (24) provided crucial contributions to set a challenging target for the Originals. England’s left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone was the standout bowler for the Originals, taking 2-17, while Kim Garth and Fi Morris each chipped in with a wicket.
The Originals’ run-chase began shakily with opener Beth Mooney falling for just two runs. However, a vital 80-run partnership between Wolvaardt and Eve Jones (39) stabilized the innings. Despite a mid-innings wobble, where the Originals lost three wickets for just eight runs, thanks to Georgia Adams’ 2-24, Wolvaardt's composure remained unshaken.
Needing 10 runs off the final set, Wolvaardt showcased her class by hitting Lauren Cheatle for three consecutive fours, securing the win with two balls to spare. The victory highlighted Wolvaardt’s crucial role and underscored the Originals’ resilience under pressure.
This win boosts the Originals' campaign, while Southern Brave are left to reflect on missed opportunities as they remain winless in the competition.
