England Select Five Uncapped Players for Series Against Australia; Bairstow and Moeen Omitted

England have named a new-look squad for next month’s white-ball series against Australia, with five uncapped players receiving their first international call-ups. The squad for the three-match T20 series features Warwickshire all-rounders Jacob Bethell, 20, and Dan Mousley, 23, alongside Essex batter Jordan Cox, Hampshire seamer John Turner, and Leicestershire left-arm bowler Josh Hull.

Hull, Bethell, and Turner are also included in the 15-man squad for the subsequent five one-day internationals. Former opener Marcus Trescothick will step in as interim coach following the departure of Matthew Mott, who left after England's T20 World Cup semi-final defeat to India and their disappointing World Cup defence last year.

England T20 Squad to Play Australia: Jos Buttler (Lancashire, captain), Jofra Archer (Sussex), Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire), Brydon Carse (Durham), Jordan Cox (Essex), Sam Curran (Surrey), Josh Hull (Leicestershire), Will Jacks (Surrey), Liam Livingstone (Lancashire), Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire), Dan Mousley (Warwickshire), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Phil Salt (Lancashire), Reece Topley (Surrey), John Turner (Hampshire)

England ODI Squad: Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson (Surrey), Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts (Durham), Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith (Surrey), Reece Topley, John Turner

High-profile omissions from the squads include World Cup winners Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali. Bairstow, 34, and Moeen, 37, have been left out as England shifts focus towards younger talent. Bairstow, who was given a two-year England contract last October, and Moeen, who retired from red-ball cricket after last summer's Ashes, were both key figures in England's 2019 World Cup victory and the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Chris Jordan, another T20 World Cup squad member, is also excluded, while Joe Root, who has not played a T20 international since 2019, is rested from the ODI squad. Injured players Mark Wood and Ben Stokes are unavailable, and Saqib Mahmood returns to the T20 squad after a long injury layoff.

The first T20 against Australia is scheduled for 11 September, just after the conclusion of the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka. Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson, Matthew Potts, and Jamie Smith will focus solely on the ODI matches. Smith, who impressed in Test cricket, is expected to play a significant role following his strong start. Mousley, known for his powerful batting, has also showcased his spin abilities in recent domestic matches.

This new squad reflects England’s intent to blend experienced campaigners with emerging talent as they prepare for the series against a formidable Australian side.
