Bradley Roberts Announces Retirement Due to Back Injury at Age 29
Wales and Dragons Hooker Ends Career with Pride and Ambition for Future
Bradley Roberts, the dynamic hooker for Wales and Dragons, has announced his retirement from professional rugby at the age of 29 due to a persistent back injury. The South Africa-born player, who made a significant impact on the field with his powerful performances, is stepping away from the game he has excelled in with pride and a sense of accomplishment.
Roberts began his career in South Africa with the Sharks in Durban before making a notable move to the Welsh Premiership, where he played for RGC. His strong performances at RGC caught the attention of Ulster, where he joined the Irish province and further showcased his talent. His impressive ball-carrying ability and dynamic play earned him a spot in the Wales squad, reflecting his successful qualification under the country's ancestry rules.
The hooker earned his first cap for Wales in the autumn of 2021 against South Africa, and he went on to earn a total of five caps. His contributions were marked by his relentless energy and commitment, traits that endeared him to fans at every club he represented.
Reflecting on his career, Roberts said, "My career has been short but very sweet, and I look back at this chapter with massive pride and astonishment. I have no doubt it will leave me in good stead for whatever life has in store for me. If my life so far is anything to go by, I’m sure it will be very exciting."
Dragons head coach Dai Flanagan paid tribute to Roberts’ dedication and influence on the field. "Bradley has always given his absolute all to the cause—something that has seen fans of every club he has represented take him to their hearts," Flanagan said. "It is that belief, drive, and talent that has seen him play successfully at the very highest level. We look forward to seeing what the next chapter holds for him and welcoming him back to Rodney Parade in the years to come."
Roberts' retirement marks the end of a promising career cut short by injury, but his impact on the game and his contributions to Welsh and Dragons rugby will be remembered fondly. As he steps away from professional rugby, Roberts looks ahead with optimism and excitement for the future, eager to embrace new opportunities and challenges beyond the sport.
