Alflaila Eyes Juddmonte International Glory at York
Alflaila, the Owen Burrows-trained five-year-old, is set to make his return to York for the prestigious Juddmonte International, a race that promises to be one of the highlights of the season. The Shadwell-owned and bred thoroughbred has made the Knavesmire his own, having secured victories in his last three outings at the track.
With a notable win in the Strensall Stakes and two successive Group Two York Stakes triumphs, Alflaila has proven his affinity for York’s long straight and demanding course. His latest victory, a hard-fought half-length success in a tactical York Stakes, marked the seventh win of his career, underscoring his resilience and ability to deliver under pressure.
Alflaila's career has been hampered by injuries, but his latest performances indicate that he is back in top form and ready to take on a field of elite contenders in the Juddmonte International. The race is shaping up to be a fiercely competitive Group One event, and Burrows is confident that his charge is ready for the challenge.
“He’s on track for York, he’s very well and is such a good-looking horse,” said Burrows. “He’s a horse that hadn’t run for such a long time at the start of the season. Jim [Crowley] mentioned that he might just come forward for that run at York.”
The York Stakes was a tactical affair, with a slow pace that could have unsettled lesser horses. However, Alflaila's ability to adapt and still secure victory was a testament to his class and determination. Burrows believes that a more strongly-run race in the Juddmonte International will play to Alflaila's strengths, particularly given his proven record at York.
“The Juddmonte is shaping up as a race that should be run at a good gallop, and that will suit him,” Burrows added. “York suits him too, that nice long straight just lets him find his pace, because nothing’s instant with him. He does take a bit of time to pick up, but he’s a very honest horse and he always hits the line very strong.”
As Alflaila prepares to return to his favourite track, hopes are high that he can add a Group One victory to his already impressive resume. With his proven track record at York and his improving form, Alflaila could well be the horse to watch in what is sure to be a thrilling renewal of the Juddmonte International.
