Guardiola Uncertain Over Ederson’s Future Amid Saudi Interest
North Carolina, USA – Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed uncertainty regarding the future of his first-choice goalkeeper, Ederson, amidst interest from the Saudi Pro League.
Following City's 4-3 friendly defeat against Celtic in Chapel Hill, Guardiola acknowledged the potential departure of the Brazilian shot-stopper. "I'd like him to stay but it depends on other clubs," Guardiola remarked. "I don't know the situation. There have been no contacts in the last days. It's a question of training, being with us until the transfer window finishes and we'll see."
Ederson's role as City's primary goalkeeper has been a topic of discussion since Guardiola opted for back-up Stefan Ortega in the first-leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid last season. Despite this, Guardiola reiterated his trust in Ederson's abilities.
Ederson made an appearance at half-time during the match against Celtic, which marked the Premier League champions' opening pre-season game.
Meanwhile, Kalvin Phillips is set to leave City, likely on loan, before the transfer window closes on August 30. Phillips, who had a disappointing stint at West Ham in the latter part of last season, saw his chances of making Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024 diminish.
Guardiola substituted Phillips at half-time against Celtic, citing a desire to protect the player after an injury-plagued end to last season. “That’s why we didn’t give him more minutes,” said Guardiola. “I don't know what's going to happen. He knows the situation, and we'll see.”
As the transfer window nears its end, Manchester City fans will be eagerly awaiting updates on the futures of both Ederson and Phillips.
