South Africa Dominates Australia in Rugby Championship Opener
South Africa began their 2024 Rugby Championship campaign with a resounding 33-7 victory over hosts Australia in Brisbane. The Springboks' comprehensive performance saw them score five tries and secure their equal-largest win against the Wallabies on Australian soil.
Kurt-Lee Arendse was the standout performer, scoring twice as South Africa raced to a 21-0 lead by halftime. Siya Kolisi and Thomas du Toit also crossed the line in the first half, while Arendse added his second try shortly after the break. Kwagga Smith completed the try-scoring for South Africa, who were dominant throughout.
The match started poorly for the Wallabies, who were reduced to 14 men for 10 minutes in the first half when Andrew Kellaway was yellow-carded for a dangerous tackle. Despite a late consolation try from centre Hunter Paisami, Australia struggled to maintain pressure and make the most of their attacking opportunities.
South Africa’s control was evident as they continued to press even when reduced to 13 men due to yellow cards for hooker Malcolm Marx and flanker Marco van Staden. Captain Siya Kolisi expressed pride in his team’s performance, though he noted areas for improvement, particularly in line-out execution.
Australian captain Allan Alaalatoa acknowledged the need for reflection and adjustment ahead of their next fixture in Perth. "You have to credit South Africa," he said. "They put us under pressure and controlled the game effectively. It’s a tough lesson, but we need to regroup and come back stronger."
The result sets a high standard for South Africa and presents a challenging start for Australia, who will look to bounce back as they prepare to host the British and Irish Lions next summer.
