Manchester United Secure Double Swoop: De Ligt and Mazraoui Join in £60m Deal
Manchester United have bolstered their squad with the high-profile signings of Bayern Munich duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui in a transfer deal that could reach nearly £60 million. The pair reunites with Erik ten Hag, their former manager at Ajax, in a move that signals United's intent to strengthen their defensive line for the upcoming season.
De Ligt, a commanding 25-year-old centre-back, has signed a five-year contract with the option for a further year. Renowned for his leadership qualities, De Ligt captained Ten Hag's Ajax side that made a memorable run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019. United have secured his services for an initial fee of £38.5 million, with potential add-ons of £4.3 million.
Mazraoui, a versatile full-back, has inked a four-year deal with a similar option for an additional year. The 26-year-old Moroccan international is expected to fill in at left-back for the injured Luke Shaw when United face Fulham in the Premier League this Friday. Shaw's return is anticipated after the first international break.
Both De Ligt and Mazraoui expressed their excitement about reuniting with Ten Hag, acknowledging his significant influence on their careers during their formative years at Ajax.
"Erik ten Hag shaped the early stages of my career, so he knows how to get the best out of me, and I cannot wait to work with him again," said De Ligt, reflecting on his move to Old Trafford. "I know what it takes to succeed at the highest level, and I’m determined to continue that record at this special club."
Mazraoui echoed these sentiments, stating, "It is exciting to be reuniting with him [Ten Hag] as I enter the prime years of my career. I know what he expects from his players, and I will give everything to help the group be successful."
The double signing marks a significant reinforcement for Manchester United as they prepare for a challenging season ahead, with Ten Hag looking to build a squad capable of competing on all fronts.
