Cardiff Strengthen Scrum-Half Options with Signing of Johan Mulder

Cardiff has bolstered its scrum-half options ahead of the 2024-25 season by signing South African Johan Mulder. This marks the second addition in the position, following the acquisition of Wales international Aled Davies from Saracens.

The 24-year-old Mulder joins from the Lions and will compete with new Wales scrum-half Ellis Bevan for a place in the starting lineup. Cardiff head coach Matt Sherratt expressed his enthusiasm for the depth and competition this signing brings to the squad.

"We now have a really competitive group of scrum-halves, who will drive each other to greater heights while also offering us different playing styles," Sherratt said. "Johan impressed us when he helped us out in Durban. From initially looking at his footage, I could see straight away that he was a Cardiff-type player. He has an attacking mind-set and is good in unstructured play, while he is similar to [Cardiff's South African fly-half] Tinus de Beer defensively."

Mulder had previously trained with Cardiff during their tour in South Africa last season, leaving a positive impression on the coaching staff. Reflecting on his move, Mulder said, "There is a lot of strong competition at scrum-half, which is great for everyone as it will push us all to improve."

With the additions of Mulder and Davies, Cardiff is well-equipped with a robust and versatile set of options at scrum-half. This depth is expected to enhance the team's performance and tactical flexibility as they prepare for the upcoming season. The club and its supporters eagerly anticipate how these new signings will integrate and contribute to Cardiff's ambitions on the field.
