Former Leicester City Manager Craig Shakespeare Passes Away at 60
Craig Shakespeare, the former Leicester City manager and esteemed football coach, has died at the age of 60. His family announced his passing, revealing that Shakespeare had been undergoing treatment for cancer since October 2023.
Shakespeare’s illustrious career in football saw him manage Leicester City and work with several other prominent clubs including West Brom, Hull, Everton, Watford, Aston Villa, and Norwich. He also served as England's assistant manager in 2016, further cementing his legacy in English football.
A statement released on behalf of Shakespeare’s family through the League Managers' Association shared that he "passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family." The family expressed their pride in his professional achievements, stating, "While the family are immensely proud of his footballing achievements as both a player and a coach, to us, his family, he will always primarily be a loving and loved husband, father, son, brother, and uncle."
The statement continued, "The loss is devastating to us all and we would ask that privacy be given at this incredibly difficult time as we try to come to terms with, and mourn, the loss of a very special person."
The family also extended their gratitude for the support they received during the challenging months of Shakespeare's illness. "The family would like to thank and acknowledge the many prayers and good wishes sent during the past few difficult months, many of which we were unable to respond to but all meant a lot to Craig and the family."
Shakespeare’s death is a significant loss to the football community, where he was highly respected for his contributions both on and off the field. His managerial stint at Leicester City is particularly remembered for his role in guiding the team following their historic Premier League title win in 2016.
