Rodrygo Expresses Disappointment Over Ballon d'Or Snub
Real Madrid forward Rodrygo has voiced his frustration at being left off the 30-man shortlist for the 2024 Ballon d'Or, despite a strong campaign last season. The 23-year-old Brazilian played a pivotal role for the Spanish giants, netting 17 goals and providing nine assists in 51 appearances across all competitions. However, his efforts were not enough to earn him a nomination for football's most prestigious individual award.
Speaking to ESPN, Rodrygo did not shy away from his disappointment. "I was upset, I think I deserved it," he said, while also acknowledging the talent of those who made the list. "I don't want to belittle the players who are there, I think they deserved it also. But I think I had a place in the 30."
Rodrygo's exclusion stands out, given that several of his Real Madrid teammates, including Jude Bellingham, Vinicius Jr., Dani Carvajal, Federico Valverde, Antonio Rudiger, and the now-retired Toni Kroos, all received nominations. The forward's omission comes despite Real Madrid's strong 2023-24 campaign, in which they lifted both the La Liga and Champions League trophies.
The Brazil international suggested that his versatility might have played a part in the snub. Known for his ability to fill various attacking roles, Rodrygo reflected on his adaptability as both an asset and a potential hindrance. "Often, I'm just filling spaces," he explained. "Is someone missing there? Put Rodrygo in. Is someone missing on the right? Rodrygo. Is someone missing as number nine? Rodrygo. That's it."
Rodrygo’s comments highlight a broader issue that some multi-functional players face. While his flexibility is invaluable to the team, he admitted that it could "get in [his] way a little" when it comes to individual accolades, as he regularly shifts between roles rather than occupying a fixed, high-profile position on the pitch.
The Ballon d'Or shortlist is curated by France Football's editorial team in collaboration with the award's ambassador, former Chelsea and Ivory Coast forward Didier Drogba, and selected media members. The winner of the 2024 Ballon d'Or will be revealed during a ceremony in Paris on 28 October.
While Rodrygo may have been overlooked this time, his contributions to Real Madrid have certainly not gone unnoticed by fans and pundits alike. His versatility and talent will undoubtedly continue to make him a key figure at the Santiago Bernabéu, and with time on his side, the young Brazilian could yet find himself in contention for football’s highest individual honor in future seasons.
