Ilkay Gundogan Set to Explore Options Amid Barcelona Uncertainty

Ilkay Gundogan could be on the move again this summer, just a year after joining Barcelona from Manchester City on a free transfer. Despite having two years remaining on his contract, the 33-year-old midfielder has been granted the freedom to explore potential offers, with Barcelona reportedly open to letting him leave if the right deal materializes.

Interest in Gundogan is already emerging from clubs in England, Spain, and Saudi Arabia, with his experience and versatility making him an attractive target. Last season, Gundogan played a crucial role for Barcelona, making 51 appearances across all competitions as the Catalan giants secured a second-place finish in La Liga.

However, the club's ongoing financial difficulties are complicating matters. Barcelona are struggling to balance their books, with new signings like Dani Olmo yet to be registered due to La Liga’s stringent squad cost control regulations. The situation has led to the club considering offers for some of their senior players, including Gundogan and striker Vitor Roque.

Barça head coach Hansi Flick, who previously managed Gundogan during his time with the German national team, addressed the speculation surrounding the midfielder following his absence from Barcelona’s season-opening victory over Valencia due to a concussion. “I know him very well. I appreciate the player and the person he is. We spoke about everything, but it will stay between us. It’s not for you to know. I have a feeling he will stay,” Flick said.

Despite Flick’s confidence, the club’s financial constraints could force their hand. Barcelona have already seen a number of exits this summer, including club captain Sergi Roberto and full-back Julian Araujo, who joined Bournemouth. With Gundogan reportedly considering his options, a return to the Premier League or a move to the Saudi Pro League could be on the cards.

In the midst of the transfer speculation, Gundogan has announced his retirement from international football. After a distinguished career that began with his debut for Germany in 2011, he earned 82 caps and captained the side at the 2024 European Championship. Reflecting on his decision, Gundogan said: “Even before the tournament, I felt a certain tiredness in my body and also in my head, which got me thinking. And the games at club and national level are not getting any less.”

As the transfer window enters its final stages, Gundogan’s future remains uncertain. While Barcelona would prefer to keep the experienced midfielder, their financial predicament could see him seek a new challenge. With interest from several top leagues, the coming weeks could bring another significant chapter in Gundogan’s illustrious career.
