Elmalka Poised for Newmarket Return in Sun Chariot Stakes
Roger Varian's star filly Elmalka is set to make a much-anticipated return to Newmarket, the scene of her thrilling 1000 Guineas triumph earlier this year, with the trainer eyeing the Virgin Bet Sun Chariot Stakes as her next target. After her Classic success in May, the daughter of Kingman has continued to showcase her talent in top-tier company, despite not adding another Group One victory to her name just yet.
Elmalka impressed with a strong fourth-place finish in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, followed by a similar result in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood, where she tested her stamina over 10 furlongs. Although she was beaten by just over three lengths in both outings, Varian has taken plenty of positives from those performances.
The Carlburg Stables handler is now looking to drop Elmalka back in trip for her next start, with the Sun Chariot Stakes on October 5 emerging as the preferred option. While the filly also holds an entry for the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown during Irish Champions Weekend, Varian is leaning towards waiting for the Newmarket contest, believing the mile trip and potential autumn ground conditions will suit her perfectly.
“She’s doing really well and I couldn’t be more pleased with her at the moment,” said Varian. “I think most likely we will wait for the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket. I think back in trip, hopefully on a bit of autumn ground, it all makes sense to head there, back to the course and distance of her Guineas win.”
Despite not yet securing another Group One victory, Varian remains confident in Elmalka’s ability to compete at the highest level. “I’m really pleased with her and I think she ran very well both at Ascot and at Goodwood. Although she hasn’t backed up her Guineas run with another Group One win, I think they were two Group One performances.”
Varian’s belief in Elmalka’s potential to claim further top-level success is unwavering. “I do think she will win another Group One and I think she will be well-suited to the challenge the Sun Chariot presents to her in October,” he added.
With her sights set on a return to Newmarket, Elmalka will be aiming to once again prove her class over the course and distance that brought her Classic glory. Racing fans will be eagerly awaiting her next move, as the talented filly looks to reaffirm her status as one of the top milers of her generation.
