Daniel Wiffen Clinches Bronze in 1500m Freestyle as Bobby Finke Sets World Record
Daniel Wiffen has added another prestigious medal to his collection, finishing third in the 1500m freestyle final at the Paris Olympics. The race was highlighted by a world record performance from the USA's Bobby Finke.
Finke's Record-Breaking Triumph
Bobby Finke dazzled the La Defense Arena with a remarkable swim, setting a new world record with a time of 14 minutes 30.67 seconds. This performance surpassed the previous record of 14:31.02 set by China's Yang Sun at the London 2012 Games. Finke's triumph marks his third Olympic gold, having also won in the 800m and 1500m freestyle at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Wiffen's Historic Achievements
Daniel Wiffen, representing Team Ireland, finished in third place with a time of 14:39.63. He was narrowly edged out by Italy's Gregorio Paltrinieri, who claimed the silver with a time of 14:34.55. Wiffen's bronze medal is his second of the Paris Olympics, adding to the gold he secured in the 800m freestyle earlier in the week.
Wiffen's victory in the 800m freestyle made him the first athlete from Northern Ireland to win an Olympic gold medal in 36 years. Additionally, he is the first Team Ireland athlete to win more than one medal in the same Games in 28 years. Ireland now boasts six medals in Paris, matching their best-ever tally from London 2012.
A Breakout Year for Wiffen
The 23-year-old swimmer has had an exceptional year, furthering his achievements with two World Championship gold medals in the 800m and 1500m freestyle earlier this year in Doha. His performances in Paris underscore his status as one of the top swimmers in the world.
Continuing the US Streak
Finke's victory in the 1500m freestyle continues the United States' impressive streak of having an individual male Olympic champion in swimming, extending a 124-year tradition. Finke's success further cements his position as one of the sport's leading figures.
